Elvis sang, “You ain’t nothin’ but a hound dog,” but the Bluetick Coonhound is so much more! Easygoing and affectionate at home, he loves his family beyond anything…except maybe the scent of prey. He’s a tireless hunter in the field and thrives on exercise and a job to do. And any Bluetick owner can tell you about his “singing” in that baying, howling voice! Here are nine reasons to love this breed:…

How to Dress a Bay Window
A bay window is a beautiful architectural detail found in many Victorian homes as well as in newer builds. It projects out from the wall of the house, forming a…well…bay in the room. And, as architecturally interesting as bay windows are, they can pose a design challenge when it comes to window coverings. Do you leave it blank? Cover the whole thing? Cover each window individually?
Actually, you have lots of options. Some people prefer a minimalist look and use woven or Roman shades on each window. Those who prefer something more structural may use shutters on either the full length of each window or the bottom half of each. Perhaps the most versatile way to dress your bay window is with drapery. You can use curtains to either highlight or minimize the window, as a focal point or as an accent…

Dress Your Bed for a Night In
Generations ago, the canopy bed, with its four posts and a frame over top, served a practical purpose. Before central heating and private bedrooms, it helped contain heat and provided at least a modicum of privacy. And, in the days of thatched ceilings, a canopy kept critters off the bed.
But the reason the style has lasted through generations, even though it’s no longer a necessity, has more to do with luxury, romance and coziness than with practicality.
Bed curtains can ramp up the style of your bedroom, add texture and warmth and even solve pesky design challenges. If your bed has posters and a frame, there are dozens of ways to dress it with fabric, from hanging curtains on the frame to draping material across the top. But what about if there’s no frame? Whether you have an elaborate carved wood four-poster, a modern iron-framed bed or no posts at all, you can achieve the same look and feel with fabric and drapery hardware…

Writing in the First Person…For Someone Else
I’ve been writing this blog for several years, using the client’s voice and tone. And because I know just enough Photoshop to be dangerous, I also source, edit, resize and add images.
When ‘Nude’ is Not Nude: Skin Tones in Lingerie
What’s in a name? A lot, according to a new company called Nubian Skin. It has the stated mission of selling lingerie for women of color that more closely matches their skin tones. They’re basing this on the concept that ‘nude’ bras are matched to Caucasian skin color.
In reality, nude lingerie comes in a variety of colors, ranging from very light to very dark, and HerRoom has always carried a broad selection. In fact some brands offer at least 4 or 5 nude colors to accommodate various skin tones. One brand’s ‘nude’ is another brand’s ‘sand.’ …

This Isn’t Grandma’s Maternity Lingerie
Back when I was pregnant with my girls, maternity fashion was an oxymoron. My wardrobe choices were limited to voluminous dresses, usually in too-sweet prints or an equally limited selection of basic skirts and pants. The point was to hide or minimize the pregnancy, not glorify it. As for lingerie–maternity bras and panties were strictly utilitarian. Many women found that no matter how sexy or sophisticated their style was, when it came to maternity lingerie, style went out the window…

How’s That New Year’s Resolution Going?
It’s Spring and I have to ask: how’s that New Year’s resolution going? According to usa.gov, the most popular resolutions include lose weight; quit smoking; volunteer; get a better job; exercise to get fit and save money.
Not surprisingly, those are also the ones most commonly broken. An article in Huffington Post says the reason most of us break New Year’s resolutions pretty quickly is stress, which causes us to do the very things we want to stop doing…

Cars & Stars: What Could Be Better?
I know next to nothing about cars, but I do know movies. This was enormously fun to research (if you call watching great movie clips “research”) and the client was quite happy with it.
